10 Reasons to ride to The Eastern Himalayan Foothills of India


Hair-pin bends, instant transformation from the flood plains to the lush green mountain cover, deep gorges, you and your motorcycle. Yes, I am talking about the Eastern Himalayan foothills. However, many call this North Bengal too and it is indeed a gem that needs to be explored.

What does actually North Bengal mean?

North Bengal lies in the Eastern Himalayan foothills of India. It is bordered by Nepal in the West, Bhutan in the East,  Bangladesh in the South East and the Indian state of Sikkim in the North-West.
Some of the renowned spots of the Eastern Himalayas are the Darjeeling, Mirik, Kurseong, Singalila National Park and the Neora Valley.

Why should you ride to the Eastern Himalayas?

1. This is one of the most geographically diverse regions that switches from the floodplains to lush dense  tropical forests to the mighty Himalayan peaks.


2. Tricky roads with steep slopes, deep valleys and landslide prone terrains is the ultimate test of the skills of the riders. 


3. The roads offer the most scenic views. You get to ride through dense oak, rhododendron and pine forests with Kanchenjunga on one side.


4. Great culinary treat and off course the squash momo.

6. This place has some amazing homestays with a view that can act like a magical spell on you so much so that you do not feel like going anywhere else but to enjoy the mist and the fog plays throughout the day.

7. This is home to Singalila National Park which is home to several medicinal plants, rare rhododendrons and animals like red pandas, hiamalayan black bear, clouded leopard. You can also explore the hidden trails and forest patches here but not without a local guide. 

8. The Eastern Himalayas can be classified as one of world's biodiversity hotspots like the Singalila national park and the Neora Valley national park.

9. It is also known for its tea plantations and Darjeeling tea is often referred to as Champagne of teas.
